I think I found my new obsession…

I recently stumbled across a post on Meg Biram — The Edit about Blair Breitenstein, a minimal fashion sketch artist with amazing work that I fell in love with at first glance. Feeling inspired by the article and the artwork, I immediately went to Blair’s Etsy store to check out more. The store is filled with painting’s that I absolutely love! I find Blair’s work to be truly inspiring just from looking at it, but the announcement introducing her artwork made her talent even more encouraging;

Buyer’s Remorse = Clean Closet

closet, messy, unorganized, organize, clean, before, after

Yesterday, I went to the mall in hopes to get a jump start on Christmas shopping, which I did, but I also ended up with far too many new additions to my own wardrobe. Lately this seems to be happening more often than it should, and I’m beginning to feel like a shopaholic. When I brought my recent purchases into my bedroom, I put aside the gifts and began to hang my new items in my closet and realized I could easily go for at least a week wearing something brand new everyday. I immediately started feeling guilty for shopping for myself and considered returning the tops I just bought. However, I really liked the tops and decided I’d get more use out of them than half the other items in my closet. At that moment, I realized my new purpose for the day was to clean out my closet (though as you can see from the above picture, this should have been my goal from the start for my day off).

I have always had issues getting rid of stuff, so I came up with a few rules/new attitudes to help me decide what items to keep and what items I could do without.

DIY Headboard

My Mom recently had her own little DIY project that turned out looking really awesome! She sent pictures along the way and walked me through the fairly easy project. Now for you I have a step by step instruction on how to turn an old wooden door into a brand new headboard!

1.) Take a louvered door, sand and wipe clean. Then take a primer and paint frame and outside edges of the louvers (you will end up covering the louvers later on). Let dry.

2.) After the primer dries, paint frame desired color and let dry.

3.) After the paint dries, you will need to strengthen the louvers in order to make a sturdy headboard. In order to do so, place batting between the slats in the door.

4.) Get two inch foam. Trim and spray adhesive on one side and place over the slats with the batting in between.

5.) Measure fabric, add approximately 2 inches extra. Fold and iron fabric to fit the inside frame of each square. Take upholstery tacks and hammer and start tapping to secure fabric along the outside edges.

6.) After the fabric is secure, drill screws into studs in the wall making sure you  measure the height width of the mattress to make sure the headboard hangs where you want.

If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Enjoy!

Polaroids and Clothes Pins

I originally wanted to build this project from scratch and make my own frame out of driftwood I found on the beach. However, after realizing it takes A WHILE to find the right pieces you need, I decided to buy a low priced, pre built frame for a quick easy project.  I took out the glass and backing, and all that I used was the actual frame. I then staple gunned hemp rope to the back of the frame.  After that, I  hung the individual pictures with mini clothes pins to give it a country feel.

For the pictures I used some old polaroid film my Dad had laying around. The film expired in 2003 so I wasn’t sure how they would come out, but they ended up coming out pretty interesting. Each picture had a sepia look to it with different colors coming through. I wanted to use polaroids because they are a heavier picture and won’t curl up as easy. If you do not have a polaroid camera you can use any other standard picture type. You will want to use more clothes pins on the corners at the top, and even on the bottom, to prevent any curling (black and white photos below).

I’m really happy with the way this project turned out. My style totally came through with the laid back country feel and the neutral colors. I got all my supplies at a local Michaels and it was real quick and easy to put together! Let me know if you try it out!
